Secret solar plant unveiled in Pinal County Arizona belongs to Apple

In early 2015 Apple had said it would invest $2B over 10 years in a command center project in Mesa, Arizona. At the time they signaled they planned to run the facility on solar power, without providing any details.

Today they unveiled the Bonnybrooke PV solar plant, a new 300-acre 50-megawatt facility, which will offset power needs for their Mesa, AZ data center. Power will not directly feed the plant, but instead will flow into the grid via a purchase agreement with Salt River Project at an undisclosed price.

Apple and SRP Worked Together to Create Renewable Generation to Meet the Needs of Apple’s Global Data Command Center

Salt River Project’s Board of Directors has approved an agreement to purchase the energy produced from Apple’s new 50-megawatt photovoltaic solar power plant, located in Pinal County east of its data command center in Mesa.

The terms of the 25-year Purchase Power Agreement support new renewable energy and development in Arizona, but do not impact other SRP ratepayers as the energy is purchased by SRP at a wholesale market rate. Apple will retain all of the environmental attributes generated from the solar plant. Via tdworld.com

Apple has committed to operating with 100% renewable energy in its facilities. The new starship headquarters building under construction in Cupertino, CA has 15 megawatts of on-site solar panel capacity as part of the campus design.
